How to Change an Arabic Statement into a Question.

--

In Arabic, it is very easy to change a statement into a question.

All you need to do is add the word “hal”.

This works for both verbal and nominal sentences:

Though the verbal sentence is preferred in Fus7a (formal/standard Arabic), the nominal sentence is also widely used.

So, as you see, the word “hal” is similar to “Est-ce-que” in French.

Chinese uses the word “ma” at the end of a declarative sentence for the same purpose.

In spoken Arabic, we do not generally use “hal”. We rely on a rising intonation to denote a question.
